Hello everyone,

« Welcome to Wax&MPC »

Concept:
- Dust off records and MPC to release one of the best mixtapes ever made ;)
- Bring scratching and beatmaking back
- Balance between American and French sounds.

Mix and selection:
This tape consists of several short mix. It reminds me when I lived in Osaka where I bought a lot of Japanese mix CDs. I chose boom bap, soul and jazzy, post-golden age hip-hop sounds. Mix are tributes to Starving Artists Crew, Sound Providers, Soul Square and C2C. A lot of tracks contain scratching and are instrumentals.

Intro A:
Here come Glad2mecha (AZ/ Phoenix) and Belush (France/ Paris) to spit a verse on Wax&MPC’s first “anthem”. I made the beat and scratched the chorus. Glad2mecha hosts A side.

SAC:
Mainly up-tempo tracks. It was uploaded on Youtube for the first time in 2012. It’s the simplest mix in this tape, almost recorded live in one shot. I used pre-recorded loops, one shots and loops on the fly with my MPC.

Sound Providers:
One of my favorite mix :) Laid back atmosphere with a lot of instrumental tracks. A lot of records used. First time I’ve used a multitrack recorder for this project too. Intensive use of the MPC with loops and one shots.

Intro B:
Belush takes over from Glad to introduce, burn and host B side. Record engraved to scratch his voice, a bit of finger drumming and beatmaking for this intro.

Soul Square:
Uploaded for the first time in late 2012. Only a few records used but it is the occasion to highlight their very good releases and their collaboration with Fisto. His album “Futur Vintage” was one of my favorite records at that time. WARNING: King Heenok is hidden somewhere :D.
Concerning the MPC, I was often asked what I was doing with it. To make it harder, I used Soul Square’s first 12” B3 track called “Remix me” to create the intro of this part of the mix. There’s also a simplified finger drumming version of this. It is the most difficult freestyle I’ve ever done.

C2C:
Not only C2C because the selection ranges from 2001 with 20syl and Hocus Pocus records to the release of Tetra on vinyl. A true time travel with breakbeats, jazzy and a few electro sounds at the end. Intensive use of the MPC and the breakbeat called “Flying Saucer 3”. I did the contrary. I started with finger drumming freestyles that I finally adapted to the mix. So for this part there’s an intro that mimics C2C’s victory at DMC2004 and an interlude with 20syl’s voice.

Concept :
- Dépoussiérage de collection de vinyles et de MPC pour sortir une des meilleures mixtapes de tous les temps ;)
- Remettre à l’honneur scratching et beatmaking.
- Equilibre entre sons US et sons FR.

Mix et sélection :
Cette tape est composée de short-mix en souvenir de l’époque où je vivais à Osaka où j’achetais beaucoup de mix CD japonais. Sélection boom bap, jazzy et soul, post âge d’or du “rap”. A savoir: Starving Arstists Crew, Sound Providers, Soul Square et C2C. Enormément de morceaux contenant des scratchs et quelques instrumentaux.

Intro A :
Arrivée de Glad2mecha (AZ/ Phoenix) et Belush (France/ Cergy) pour rapper un couplet chacun sur l’ « hymne » de Wax&MPC. Beat et scratchs de votre serviteur. Glad2mecha va se charger de présenter la face A.

SAC :
Sélection de beats up tempo qui donne la pêche. Uploadé pour la première fois sur Youtube en janvier 2012. Mix le plus simple de tous, quasiment enregistré en une fois dans les conditions du direct. Utilisation de boucles préenregistrées, one-shots et boucles a la volée dans la MPC.

Sound Providers :
Un de mes mix préférés :) Ambiance plus laid-back avec beaucoup plus d’instrumentaux. Beaucoup de disques utilisés. Apparition du multipiste pour l’enregistrement. Grosse utilisation de la MPC avec toujours loops et one-shots.

Intro B :
Belush prend le relais pour présenter, faire péter et porter la face B. Disque fabriqué à l’unité pour scratcher sa voix, un peu de finger drumming et beatmaking en intro :)

Soul Square :
Mix uploadé pour la première fois fin 2012. Peu de disques utilisés au total mais c’était l’occasion de mettre en lumière leurs très bonnes sorties et leur collaboration avec Fisto. « Futur Vintage » étant un de mes disques préférés a l’époque. Attention le roi Heenok se cache quelque part :D
En ce qui concerne l’utilisation de la MPC, à l’époque on me demandait de quelle manière je m’en servais. Pour corser la difficulté j’ai fabriqué l’intro de cette partie du mix avec les éléments présents en piste B3 « Remix me » du premier maxi des Drum Brothers aka Soul Square. Pour ceux qui ne croient que ce qu’ils voient une vidéo de finger drumming d’une version simplifiée de cette intro existe. Mon freestyle le plus difficile techniquement jusque maintenant.

C2C:
C2C au sens large puisque la sélection part de 2001 avec des disques de 20syl et Hocus Pocus, jusqu’à la sortie de l’album Tetra en vinyle. Un véritable voyage dans le temps entre breakbeats, son jazzy et sons qui tendent plus vers l’électronique sur la fin. Grosse utilisation de la MPC et notamment du breakbeat Flying Saucer 3. Je suis parti de la démarche inverse. D’abord faire des freestyle en live dans la MPC et ensuite les adapter et les intégrer dans le mix. On a donc une intro qui reprend la victoire du DMC 2004 et un interlude en milieu de mix qui a été « 20sylisée » dans sa version finale.
